WHY is K-Pop so Popular?

Dec 12, 2016

I would like to talk about why is K-pop so popular all over the world, especially in East Asia such as Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Japan.

So, how could K-Pop achieved big success and gained popularity in East Asian music market in such a short period?

First of all, K-Pop became popular for their addicting melodies. K-pop uses lyrics and melodies that makes you instantly stuck in your head. Also, they use very catchy tunes. For instance, Girl's Generation's song 'Gee' has kind of meaningless lyrics. It consist of 'gee gee gee gee,' 'oh oh oh,' 'ye ye ye' which doesn't really mean anything, but very catchy and easy to sing along with dance.

Second, their choreography is one of the reason it gained popularity.

Their performance is quite complicated and challenging, they usually require professional dancers. The famous dancers in Hollywood often teaches choreography to Korean pop stars.

Third, they are multi-entertainers.

To become K-Pop idols, you have to have training period as a trainee. Usually, they became trainee when they are teenagers and spend many years to debut as a new K-Pop group.

During the training period, not only they learn how to sing and dance, but also they are learnt to be multi-entertainer. They will be trained how to act, how to talk at a talk show, or develop their own unique talents, so that they could take a role in many different TV shows and movies.

Lastly, they are multilingual

Since most students in a lot of Asian countries are required to learn English from an early age, K-pop idols frequently mix in English sayings in their lyrics. Not only does this appeal to fans throughout Asia, It makse K-Pop stars more accessible to fans in Western countries.
